Musicology는 넓은 뜻으로는 ‘음악에 대한 학문적 연구의 총칭’ 이라고 말하고 있으며 좁게 쓰면 ‘서양 문화에서의 음악역사’에 대한 공부라고 말하고 있습니다. 크게 Historical musicology, Ethnomusicology, Systematic musicology로 나누어지며 Wikipedia에서는 Musicology를 다음과 같이 정의하고 있습니다.

In the broad definition, the parent disciplines of musicology include history; cultural studies and gender studies; philosophy, aesthetics and semiotics; ethnology and cultural anthropology; archeology and prehistory; psychology and sociology; physiology and neuroscience; acoustics and psychoacoustics; and computer/information sciences and mathematics. Musicology also has two central, practically oriented subdisciplines with no parent discipline: performance practice and research, and the theory, analysis and composition of music. The disciplinary neighbors of musicology address other forms of art, performance, ritual and communication, including the history and theory of the visual and plastic arts and of architecture; linguistics, literature and theater; religion and theology; and sport. Musical knowledge and know-how are applied in medicine, education and music therapy, which may be regarded as the parent disciplines of Applied Musicology. 

Traditionally, historical musicology has been considered the largest and most important sub discipline of musicology. Today, historical musicology is one of several large sub disciplines. Historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and systematic musicology are approximately equal in size - if numbers of active participants at international conferences is any guide. Systematic musicology includes music acoustics, the science and technology of acoustical musical instruments, physiology, psychology, sociology, philosophy and computing. Cognitive musicology is the set of phenomena surrounding the computational modeling of music. 

이 각 부분은 다시 여러 학문 분야로 세분됩니다. 다시 말하면 이 많은 주제들을 전부 공부할 수가 없으니 대학원 때 공부해야 할 주제 (topic)을 정해놓고 지원준비를 해야 합니다. 이 공부해야 할 주제에 따라 학교선택과 교수선택이 많이 달라지기 때문입니다. 물론 본인이 처음 공부하려고 생각했던 주제와 실제로 공부하면서 연구하고자 하는 주제가 달라지는 경우도 비일비재하지만 일단 지원하기 위해서 어느 정도는 본인이 생각하는 기준이 있어야 하기 때문입니다. 

서양 역사, 철학, 문화에 대해 많은 지식배경을 가지고 있어야 함은 물론 서양음악에 대한 이론과 연주실력까지 요구되니 한국학생이 쉽게 선택하기는 어려운 학문이라고 하겠습니다. 교수 research는 물론 Writing sample, Recommendation, SOP등도 topic에 맞춰 작성해야 하고 교수 사전 contact도 중요합니다. 학교에서 요구하는 credential을 충족해야 함은 물론입니다. 참고로 Eastman School of Music의 musicology 석사과정 (실제로 석사, 박사 통합과정이라고 생각해야 합니다.) 입시요강을 살펴 보겠습니다. 

Combined MA/PhD in Musicology

Applicants must apply for the combined MA/PhD; there is no separate application process for the MA, which is granted “in passing” as the student works toward the PhD.  Applicants are reviewed for their readiness for a doctoral level research degree

앞에서 보듯이 모든 프로그램이 그렇다는 것은 아니지만 대부분의 curriculum이 박사학위를 전제로 한 프로그램입니다. GRE General Test 점수를 요구하는 학교들이 많고요, Research Paper, Writing sample도 수준이상이 되어야 합니다. 석사과정 2년, 박사과정 coursework이 최소한 2년, Ph.
