Brass Audition Information

 

Trumpet

Audition Requirements

  1. Perform music that demonstrates lyricism and technique- one or two movements from a concerto or sonata, or prepare two etudes of contrasting styles.
  2. All major scales performed 1-9-1 as sixteenths, minimum-quarter note equals 60
  3. Demonstrate sight reading ability during audition.
  4. Orchestral excerpts from standard trumpet literature (optional).
  5. Jazz tune to demonstrate style and improvisational skills (optional). Please bring your own Aebersold recording to the audition.

 

Live auditions are strongly preferred. Students who are unable to travel to Boulder for a live audition may submit a high-quality recorded audition. Please see the Recorded Audition Guidelines for information on submitting a recording.

In the event you are unable to attend the official audition dates, an individual audition may be set up with Professor Terry Sawchuk. Please feel free to contact Professor Sawchuk if you have any questions, or if you wish to schedule a visit to Boulder.

 

Trombone

Tenor Trombone

Solo or single movement of student’s choice, to be selected from:
Barat: Andante et Allegro
Blazhevich: Concert Piece No. 5
Grondahl: Concerto (mvt. 1)
Guilmant :Morceau Symphonique
Or piece of equivalent difficulty

  1. Student’s choice of an etude, orchestral excerpt, or jazz/improvisation (required of applicants to the BM with Jazz Emphasis degree)

Bass Trombone

  1. Solo or single movement of student’s choice, to be selected from:
    Galliard: Six Sonatas (contrasting movements from one sonata)
    Jacob: Cameos (selected movements)
    Lebedev: Concerto in One Movement
    Marcello: Sonatas (contrasting movements from one sonata)
    McCarty: Sonata
    Or piece of equivalent difficulty
  2. You choice of an etude, orchestral excerpts, or jazz/improvisation (required of applicants to the BM with Jazz Emphasis degree).

Piano accompaniment is optional. An accompanist can be provided if given adequate notice.

Horn

Audition Requirements

  1. Required Solo Work (Accompaniment Optional)
    • All candidates for admission must perform the first movement or rondo of a Mozart Concerto for Horn (K.412, K.417, K.447, or K.495).  The Mozart Concert Rondo (K.371) or Mozart Horn Quintet (K.407) are also acceptable works.
  2. Solo Work of Choice (Accompaniment Optional)
    • A solo movement of the candidate’s choice.  This repertoire may include (but is not limited to):

o    Beethoven  Sonata, Op. 17

o    Haydn, Franz J.  Concerto No. 1 or  2

o    Rosetti  Any Concerto

o    Saint-Saens  Morceau de Concert

o    Strauss, Franz  Concerto Op. 8

o    Strauss, Richard  Concerto No. 1  ​

                  Etude

                  An etude of the candidate’s choice which demonstrates excellent tone, control, musicianship, and technique.  The etude may be chosen from (but not limited to) any of the following:

o    Gallay Twelve Studies, Op. 57

o    Kopprasch  Sixty Selected Studies

o    Kling Forty Studies

o    Maxime-Alphonse Book Three or higher

                  Orchestral Excerpts (OPTIONAL)

                  Please choose any three (3) excerpts from the following list:

o    Beethoven Symphony No. 6, mvmt. III (horn 1)

o    Brahms Symphony No. 3, mvmt. III (horn 1)

o    Mahler Symphony No. 1, mvmt. III (horn 2)

o    Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, mvmt. I low tutti (horn 1)

o    Strauss Till Euilenspiegel, opening call (horn 1)

o    Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, mvmt. II (horn 1)

o    Wagner Gotterdammerung, Siegfried’s Rhine Journey Short Call (horn 1)

Tuba and Euphonium

Audition Requirements

  1. Solo Work (Accompaniment Optional)
    • Two contrasting solos or etudes, or one piece with contrasting sections. One piece should demonstrate technical ability and the other should highlight lyrical and expressive qualities. Solos should be performed with piano accompaniment if possible (An accompanist can be provided with adequate notice for live auditions by contacting Professor Dunn).
    • This repertoire may be selected from the following list (but is not limited to):
