Brass Audition Information
Prescreen
is required for Regular Decision applicants in the following areas:
contemporary/CAM, jazz, flute, keyboard, tuba/euphonium, viola, and violin
Trumpet
All majors
- All major scales - Two (2) octaves when
possible.
- One (1) etude of the applicant's choice that
demonstrates the student's complete musical and technical abilities.
- At least one (1) movement from one of the
following pieces (multiple pieces may be selected if desired):
- Haydn Concerto
- Hummel Concerto
- Hindemith Sonata
- Kennan Sonata
- Stevens Sonata
Performance majors:
Applicants
for the Instrumental Performance program should also perform the following
orchestral excerpts:
- Mussorgsky -
Pictures at an Exhibition - Promenade
- Stravinsky - Petrushka; Ballerina's Dance
- Respighi - Pines of Rome; offstage solo
In
addition to the above requirements, you will be expected to sight-read.
Trombone
Select
two (2) contrasting etudes or solos (or movements from a sonata or concerto)
which best demonstrate your tone, range, technique, and lyric ability. The
following repertoire is recommended, but similar works may be substituted:

Horn
- All major scales; 2 octaves in eighth notes
at metronome mark 100
- Select two to three contrasting etudes or
solos (or movements from a concerto or sonata) which best demonstrate your
tone, range, technique, and lyric ability. The following repertoire is
recommended, but similar works may be substituted.
- Choose one Etude from the
following:
- Concert Etude #1 - Complete
Method for the Horn by Oscar Franz (2 pages)
- Two (2) contrasting etudes from
either Kopprasch, Mueller, or Maxime Alphonse
- One Movement from either a Strauss or Mozart
Concerto. No cadenza necessary.
