Woodwinds Audition Information

Prescreen is required on the following: Choral Conducting, Classical Flute, Classical Tuba, Classical Viola, Classical Violin, Jazz Instrumentalists/Vocalists, Keyboard Degrees, Orchestral/Wind Conducting. Accompaniment is not required for recorded or live auditions. 

 

Bassoon

Applicants to all degrees

  • Contrasting solos of the candidate’s choice
  • Orchestral excerpts
    • Ravel- Bolero
    • Mozart- Marriage of Figaro Overture
    • Rimsky Korsakov- Scheherazade
    • Stravinsky- Rite of Spring

 

Clarinet

Applicants to the Master of Music and Artist Diploma

  • Mozart Concerto
  • One complete piece of your choice from the Classical or Romantic periods
  • One contemporary piece of your choice
  • Three contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice

Applicants to the Doctor of Musical Arts

  • Mozart Concerto
  • One complete piece of your choice from the Classical or Romantic periods
  • One contemporary piece of your choice
  • Either the Copland or Nielsen Concerto
  • Three contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice

 

Flute

Prescreening

  • First movement of Mozart Concerto No, 1 in G major, KV 313 OR No. 2 in D major, KV 314, exposition only
  • A selection from the solo literature by Copland, Dutilleux, Ibert, Jolivet, Liebermann, Martin, Martinu, Nielsen, Prokofiev, Schubert, or equivalent
  • 3 orchestral excerpts of the applicants choosing

Live Audition

  • One of the seven sonatas by J.S. Bach, complete
  • Mozart Concerto No, 1 in G major, KV 313 OR No. 2 in D major, KV 314, complete work
  • A selection from the solo literature by Copland, Dutilleux, Ibert, Jolivet, Liebermann, Martin, Martinu, Nielsen, Prokofiev, Schubert, or equivalent
  • A contemporary solo work demonstrating fluency with extended techniques
  • 3 orchestral excerpts from the list below
  •     Brahms: Symphony No. 4
  •     Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis
  •     Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe
  •     Mendelssohn: Scherzo from MidSummer's Night Dream
  •     Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf
  •     Rossini: William Tell Overture
  •     Stravinsky: Firebird Suite

 

Oboe

Applicants to the Master of Music

  • Mozart- Oboe Concerto in C, K.314
  • One of the following:

    • Saint-Saens- Oboe Sonata, Opus 166 (movements 1 and 3)
    • Schumann- Three Romances, Opus 94 (movements 1 and 2)
  • The following orchestral excerpts:
    • Brahms- Violin Concerto (2nd movement, Solo)
    • Rossini- Overture, The Silken Ladder (Fast Solo)
    • Ravel- Le Tombeau de Couperin (3rd movement, Opening Solo)

Applicants to the Doctor of Musical Arts

    • Britten- Six Metamorphosis After Ovid (select 3 movements)
    • Vaughan Williams- Oboe Concerto (1st movement)
