Woodwind Audition Information

 

Bassoon

*No pre-screening required for bassoon

Audition RequirementsProspective students should prepare the following: Mozart Bassoon Concerto in B flat, KV191 - first and second movements, with cadenzas; a 20th century work from the standard solo repertoire and 2-3 standard orchestral excerpts of your choice. Applicants should also be prepared to perform major and harmonic minor scales (preferably full range), chromatic scale (preferably full range), and sight read.

Clarinet

*No pre-screening required for clarinet

Audition Requirements: Prospective M.M. and D.M.A. students should prepare thirty minutes of music, including repertory that demonstrates diversity of styles, time periods, and forms (sonatas, concerti, orchestral excerpts, and studies). Sight reading will also be required.

Flute

Pre-screening requirement: All graduate flute applicants are required to submit a pre-screening recording. Selections should include the following:

1. Mozart Concerto in G Major, K 313, or D Major, K 314, first movement exposition
2. One contrasting piece from the standard solo repertoire
3. The following orchestral excerpts:

l  Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3 – measures 328 – 360 ;

l  Mendelssohn: Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream – 2 measures before P to the end ;

l  Brahms: Symphony No. 4, movement IV – measures 93 – 105

Live Audition Requirements: Applicants for the M.M. and D.M.A in flute should prepare:

1. Mozart Concerto in G Major, K 313, or D Major, K 314
2. A Baroque period sonata by Bach or Telemann
3. Romantic or 20th/21st century piece(s) of choice
4. 5 orchestral excerpts displaying a variety of styles

Please note: For the Fall 2019 admissions cycle, we regret that we are unable to accommodate applications to the DMA in Flute Performance and Literature. We continue to welcome applications to the Master of Music in Flute Performance and Literature.

Oboe

Pre-screening requirement: There is no pre-screening requirement for the Master of Music (M.M.) degree in Oboe Performance and Literature. Only Artist Diploma (A.D.) and Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A) graduate oboe applicants are required to submit a pre-screening recording along with their other application materials.

Live Audition Requirements: Prospective M.M., A.D., and D.M.A. students should prepare thirty minutes of music demonstrating  different styles, time periods, and forms (etudes, concerti, sonatas, and orchestral excerpts). In addition, applicants should be prepared to sight read, and prepare the following orchestral excerpts:

• Beethoven, Symphony Nr. 3 (Funeral March).
• Brahms, Violin Concerto (2nd mvmt. solo).
• Mendelssohn, Symphony Nr. 3 "Scottish" Vivace non troppo (at letter A and after letter B).
• Shostakovich Symphony Nr. 5 (3rd mvmt. solo, after 84).
• Stravinsky, Pulcinella, larghetto (at 8).

Saxophone

Pre-screening requirement: ALL graduate saxophone applicants are required to submit a pre-screening recording along with their other application materials. Selections should include three contrasting pieces or movements from different major style periods. 

Live Audition Requirements: Applicants for the M.M. degree should prepare a recital program equivalent to a B.M. performance degree recital. Applicants for the D.M.A. degree should prepare a recital program equivalent to a M.M. performance degree recital (piano accompaniment is not required). Applicants should also be prepared to perform major and harmonic minor scales (full range) and sight read. Applicants with jazz training are encouraged to also audition for the jazz faculty for possible assistantship consideration in the jazz division.
