Keyboard Audition Information

MM, PDSP, AD

All Master's and Diploma applicants should prepare from memory three major contrasting works from different styles and periods. Any sonata presented should be presented in its entirety. Applicants must also submit a complete repertoire of works performed or studied at the time of application to Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Master's or Diploma applicants in piano may apply for an Associate Instructor position by requesting an interview on the application form. The Piano Associate Instructor interview, scheduled during the applicant's audition visit, explores the applicant's pedagogical background, teaching experience, and ability to teach effectively in English.

Doctor of Music (DM)

Doctor of Music auditions in piano are granted only after the faculty has reviewed screening materials. A recorded screening audition must be uploaded to our online system to be received by the Office of Music Admissions no later than January 7, 2019. The screening repertoire should be of substantial scope and length, and include works from at least three differing stylistic periods, and works should be presented in their entirety. The Decision Desk screening audition should be accompanied by a complete list of repertoire ever learned, studied, performed or rehearsed by the applicant (solo, chamber, and concerto), an endorsement from the applicant's most recent piano teacher and a written personal statement about the applicant's goals for the degree. Evidence of an acceptable TOEFL score must be submitted together with the application by December 1, 2018. If an admissible TOEFL score of (600 PBT, 250 CBT, 100 IBT) has not been received by the Office of Admissions by the application deadline of December 1, 2018, the application and screening recording will not be reviewed.

Doctoral applicants whose screening recordings are selected for an in-person audition and interview will be scheduled to perform for the faculty on February 25 or 26, 2019. The committee will select works to be heard from the submitted program; a short interview will follow, exploring the applicant's general preparedness for the degree. The program should be of substantial scope, with complete works from at least three differing style periods, and may include pieces submitted as part of the screening process. Any questions regarding repertoire should be directed to Professor David Cartledge: docartle@indiana.edu.

All Doctoral applicants in piano are considered applicants for Associate Instructor positions.
