Woodwinds Audition Information

Bassoon (MM)

The graduate repertoire in bassoon is patterned after a typical undergraduate senior recital. In order to provide some latitude, the requirements are not dictated. However, you must prepare sufficient material to perform a full solo recital containing works which show a diversity of periods and styles.

In addition to those general requirements, graduate students should prepare several contrasting orchestral excerpts of the applicants’ choice and two contrasting solo works. You are urged to perform repertoire which best represents your performance level and musical taste.

Artist Diploma

AD applicants in bassoon must prepare a program of no less than 70 minutes duration, representing at least three style periods and including at least two large-scale works.

Clarinet (MM)

However, you must prepare sufficient material to perform a full solo recital containing works which show a diversity of periods and styles.

In addition to those general requirements, graduate students should include several contrasting orchestral excerpts of the applicants’ choice.

Flute (MM)

Prescreen repertoire

All applicants must upload a pre-screening video to the Peabody application by December 1st. The video must include:

  • Two contrasting movements from a sonata by J.S. Bach OR two contrasting movements from a concerto by Mozart (including cadenzas)
  • A complete work for solo flute (a work originally written for flute alone, i.e. Bach Partita, Bozza Image, Berio Sequenza)
  • A third contrasting work of the candidate’s choice (typically a work for flute and piano such as a sonata, a concerto, or an unaccompanied work)

Please note that etudes are not considered acceptable audition repertoire. The flute faculty strongly urges using an accompanist for the pre-screening video recording, though it is not technically required.

Live audition repertoire

Applicants are urged to perform repertoire which best represents their performance level. Applicants who successfully pass the pre-screening will be invited to a live audition. All applicants must audition in-person at Peabody.

  • A complete sonata by J.S. Bach OR a complete concerto by Mozart (including cadenzas)
  • A complete work for solo flute (a work originally written for flute alone, i.e. Bach Partita, Bozza Image, Berio Sequenza)
  • A third contrasting complete work of the candidate’s choice (typically a work for flute and piano such as a sonata, a concerto, or an unaccompanied work)
  • 3 contrasting orchestral excerpts of the candidate’s choice
  • Sight-reading may be requested at audition
