Keyboards Audition Information

 

 

 

Piano

 

2019 Rochester Audition Dates:  

 

MM or DMA in Performance & Literature: Saturdays, February 9th, 16th and February 23rd

 

MM or DMA in Composition, Jazz, Music Education majors: February 2nd, 9th, 16th and February 23rd (with other restrictions as noted under the applicant’s intended major.)

 

Note: Regional auditions and self-recorded auditions are not accepted for graduate piano performance applicants.

 

 

MM and DMA: Pre-screening Requirement:  

 

 

l  By December 1, graduate piano performance applicants seeking a Rochester audition must upload a preliminary audition recording.

 

l  The pre-screening recording must be a minimum of 30 minutes in duration of solo music. Repertoire requirements for the pre-screening recording must include at least two works representing different styles, plus one virtuoso etude by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Bartok, or Ligeti (etudes in slow tempos such as Chopin Op 10 #3, Op 10 #6, Op 25 #7 or Rachmaninoff Op 39 #2 are not acceptable).

 

l  The following lists repertoire requirements by degree for applicants invited to a live audition.

 

 

 

MM auditions requirements:  

 

 

l  An audition in Rochester is required. 

 

l  Applicants must prepare an audition program (minimum 45 minutes) to be performed from memory, including: 

 

 

ü  one virtuoso concert etude (see etude requirement listed above) and

 

ü  At least three complete works representing different styles.

 

 

 

 

DMA audition requirements:  

 

 

l  An audition in Rochester is required.

 

l  Applicants must prepare an audition program (minimum 60 minutes) to be performed from memory, including: 

 

 

ü  one virtuoso concert etude (see etude requirement listed above) and

 

ü  at least three complete works representing different styles.

 

 

 

 

MM and DMA majors in Composition or Music Education:  

 

 

l  Applicants for each degree should prepare three contrasting pieces from three different stylistic periods, including one piece by Bach.

 

l  Selections should be performed from memory.

 

l  Student compositions and pieces in jazz or popular styles are not acceptable for the purpose of this audition.

 

l  Applicants who apply in these majors and audition on piano are not compared to performance & literature majors.

 

l  Applicants in jazz studies & contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz above.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Organ

 

2019 Rochester Audition Dates: February 8th, February 15th, February 22nd

 

 

MM auditions requirements:  

 

 

l  Applicants should prepare a program of not more than 30 minutes, including a major work of J.S. Bach.

 

l  Other works should be of contrasting styles and periods, and should include at least one lyrical and one virtuosic selection.

 

l  Performance from memory is encouraged, but not required.

 

 

 

 

DMA audition requirements:  

 

 

l  Applicants should prepare a program of not more than 30 minutes, including a major work of J.S. Bach.

 

l  The program should reflect the applicant’s breadth of knowledge of the organ repertoire, and their highest technical and musical achievements.

 

l  Performance from memory is encouraged, but not required.

 

l  If the applicant is skilled in improvisation, a five-minute improvisation may be part of the program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Harpsichord

MM and DMA audition requirements:

 

Applicants should prepare a program of not more than 30 minutes, which should include a work of J.S. Bach, and a selection of pieces from: 

 

 

l  The French literature of the 17th and 18th centuries

 

l  Italian music of the 17th century

 

l  Memorization is encouraged, but not required. 


 

l  Applicants are also required to demonstrate skill in continuo realization.
