Percussion Audition Information
Percussion
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: January 25th and February 8th
l No regional or recorded auditions for graduate percussion applicants. All MM and DMA applicants must audition in person at Eastman.
l Percussionists are expected to bring their own sticks, mallets, cymbals, etc.; other equipment is provided.
MM and DMA: Pre-screening Requirement:
l By December 1, all graduate percussion applicants must upload a preliminary audition video recording (*Please submit individual tracks for each piece or etude on your video).
l The following repertoire is required.
l Any substitutions, with the exception of where multiple options are offered, will not be acceptable.
l Snare Drum: Long Roll-
l A movement of Bach from either the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin or the Six Suites for Solo Cello. 2 mallet examples preferred. (Memorization is encouraged.)
l A 3-4 minute excerpt or movement from a contemporary solo Marimba work
l Delecluse Etude No. 1 from the Keiskleiriana, Vol. 1
l 2 contrasting orchestral excerpts on each of the following: snare drum, xylophone and timpani
MM and DMA audition requirements:
l Should include snare drum, timpani, and keyboard percussion
l Suggested solo repertoire:
ü Snare Drum: Etudes from Delecluse, Macarez, Peters, Tompkins
ü Timpani: 3 contrasting orchestral excerpts and a solo or etude of your choice from Delecluse, Carter, Hochrainer
ü Keyboard Percussion: A movement of Bach from either the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin or the Six Suites for Solo Cello
ü Burritt Azure, Caritas or Scirroco; Druckman Reflections on the Nature of Water; Klatzow Dances of Earth and Fire; Maslanka Variations on Lost Love; SueyoshiMirage; Schwantner Velocities; Stevens Rhythmic Caprice; Sammut Cameleon; Stout Rumble Strips or Sendime
ü Three excerpts from the standard repertoire on each of the following: snare drum, xylophone, glockenspiel, and timpani required
ü Sight-reading required
