Bassoon

2020 Rochester Audition Date: February 7th  

Note: No regional or recorded auditions for graduate bassoon applicants. All MM and DMA bassoon applicants must audition in person at 

Eastman.

MM and DMA Pre-screening Requirements: 

Upload a video recording within your online application which includes the following repertoire  

l  One Milde étude from op. 24

l  One melodic étude in a slow tempo of the applicant’s choice

l  Orchestral excerpt: Ravel Bolero

MM Audition Requirements: 

l  One Milde étude from op. 24

l  Milde Concert Study #33 from opus 26

l  A complete concerto of the applicant’s choice

l  One piece written since 1980 of the applicant’s choice

l  Orchestral excerpts: 

ü  Mozart: Marriage of Figaro Overture mm.139-171

ü  Ravel: Bolero rehearsal 2 to 3

ü  Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 4: mvt. II, m. 274 to end

DMA audition requirements:  

l  Milde Concert Study #33 from opus 26

l  A complete standard concerto of the applicant’s choice performed from memory

l  One piece written since 1980 of the applicant’s choice

ü  Beethoven Symphony no. 4: mvt. IV, solo mm. 184 – 190

ü  Mozart: Marriage of Figaro Overture mm.139-171

Clarinet

2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 7th, February 14th, February 21st and February 28^th

Pre-screening Requirement:  

l  By December 1, all clarinet applicants seeking a Rochester or regional audition must upload a preliminary audition video recording.

l  Please include all of the following on your video, and upload your files in the order listed.  

ü  One etude from Rose 32 Etudes

ü  Mozart Concerto, K.622, First movement exposition with piano accompaniment 

ü  Beethoven Symphony No. 6, Second movement: from one bar before D through two bars after E (mm. 68-77)

ü  Mendelssohn, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Scherzo): Beginning to bar 48

MM and DMA live audition requirements: 

l   Two Etudes from Rose 32 Etudes

ü  One slow etude from the following: 1, 11, 13, 19, 21, or 31

ü  One fast etude from the following: 10, 16, 20, or 24 

l    One of the following solo works:

ü  Mozart Concerto, K. 622 (first movement)

Flute

2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 7th, February 14th, February 21st, and February 28^th

Pre-screening Requirement:  

l  By December 1, all graduate flute applicants seeking a Rochester or regional audition must upload a preliminary pre-screen video, which must include each of the items listed below.

l  Your pre-screen recording can be made either with or without piano accompaniment. 

ü  Mozart: Entire 1st and 2nd movement with cadenzas from D or G major concerto 

ü  J.S. Bach: Two movements from a sonata or partita of your choice

ü  A work of your choice 

l  The following 5 standard orchestral excerpts (not the entire work): 

ü  Beethoven: Leonore Overture #3 – mm. 328 through 360

ü  Brahms: Symphony IV;  Movement 4, mm. 89-103

ü  Mendelssohn: Scherzo from Midsummer Night’s Dream; from 12 measures before rehearsal letter P to the end.

ü  Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis; Solo from Movement III – Andantino

ü  Saint-Saens: “Aviary” movement from the Carnival of the Animals

MM and DMA live audition requirements:  

l  Prepared repertoire should include the following:  

ü  A Mozart concerto

ü  A sonata or partita by J.S. Bach 

l  A work from the contemporary solo literature

l  An additional work of your choice

l  Orchestral excerpts as appropriate to training and experience

Oboe

2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 7th, February 14th, and February 21st and February 28^th

DMA pre-screening requirements:  

l  A pre-screening video is required for all DMA applicants, and should include all of the items noted below except sight-reading.

MM & DMA live audition requirements:  

l  Prepared repertoire should include studies (such as Ferling or Bozza), contemporary solo literature (such as Berio or Dorati) and orchestral excerpts.

l  Possible sight-reading

Saxophone

2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 7th, February 14th, and February 21^st

Pre-screening Requirement:  

l  By December 1, all saxophone applicants seeking a live audition must upload a preliminary audition video recording. 

l  Please make a video recording of the items listed below.

l  If approved from pre-screening, the live audition should follow the same repertoire guidelines, and can present the same or different material.

MM auditions requirements:  

l  Prepared repertoire should include three complete works from standard and contemporary solo literature appropriate to training and experience.

DMA audition requirements:  

l  Prepared repertoire should include four complete works representing contrasting styles.

l  Applicants are encouraged to include one transcription of a work written before the 20th century, as well as a contemporary work requiring the extensive use of extended techniques.

l  Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for their requirements.

Woodwind Specialist

MM auditions requirements:  

l  Entrance to this program requires two auditions, one on the primary instrument, and one on the second primary instrument. (Note that instruments in the same family do not meet the requirements for this major; e.g., flute and piccolo, oboe and English horn, etc.) 

l  Applicants should follow the audition guidelines in this section according to their primary and secondary instrument. 

l  Follow pre-screening guidelines (if required) for your primary instrument only; pre-screening is not required for the secondary instrument.
