Bassoon (MM)

 

Online video is preferred, but audio is acceptable.

 

Required preliminary repertoire

 

l  One Milde étude Op. 24

l  One melodic étude of the applicant's choice

l  Three to five minute solo of the applicant's choice

Clarinet (MM)

 

The submission must be played in a continuous unedited segment; any indication that there has been editing or that recording equipment was paused/stopped between selections will result in the disqualification of the application. All pieces should be played unaccompanied.

 

Required preliminary repertoire (video submission)

 

l  Mozart Clarinet Concerto, 1st movement, Exposition only (beginning of Solo until bar 133)

l  Copland Concerto, from the beginning to end of the cadenza

l  Mendelssohn Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, measures 1 – 48

l  Brahms Symphony No. 3. Movement 2, Andante, bars 1- 23

Live audition repertoire

 

l  The entire Mozart Clarinet Concerto, K. 622

l  Choose and prepare one of the following concertos in its entirety: Debussy, Premiere Rhapsodie; Nielsen, Concerto; Weber, Concerto No 2 in Eb; or Copland, Concerto.

l  Orchestral excerpts (do not use excerpt books for these passages) Mendelssohn Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream, measures 1-48; Beethoven Symphony 6, 1st movement measures 476-492 & 2nd movement measures 69-77 Beethoven Symphony 8, movement 3 Menuetto (Trio); Brahms Symphony 3, movements 1 and 2 (please prepare solos and tutti passages)

 

Applicants will also be expected to demonstrate sight-reading ability with material chosen by the instructor.

Flute (MM)

 

Preliminary submission (audio or video: video preferred)

 

l  Two contrasting movements from a standard solo work (such as a Bach sonata), or one standard work with contrasting sections such as a Paris Conservatory concours piece, preferably recorded with accompaniment

l  Two complete contrasting movements from a Mozart concerto (accompaniment required.) Cadenzas are not necessary but may be played if desired.

l  One contrasting work of your choice

l  Several orchestral excerpts to be chosen from

 

ü  Brahms: Symphony No. 4 last movement, mm. 93 - 105

ü  Debussy: Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, mm. 1 - 4 and mm. 21- 30 

ü  Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphisis, solo from movement III

ü  St. Saëns: Volière from Carnival of the Animals

ü  Stavinsky: Variation from The Firebird

At least one of the 4 works below should be from memory, excluding the Orchestral Excerpts.

 

l  Two contrasting movements from either the Bach Partita in A Minor, BWV 1013 or one of the following Bach sonatas: B Minor, A Major, E Minor or E Major

l  First and second movement expositions from the Mozart Concerto in G Major, KV 313

l  Two other works representing two different styles from the standard repertoire

l  Orchestral Excerpts:

 

ü  Brahms: Symphony No. 4 last movement, mm. 93 - 105

ü  Debussy: Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, mm. 1- 4 and mm. 21-30

ü  Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis, solo from movt. III

A pianist is not required for the audition.

l  A major twentieth-century sonata for flute and piano such as Prokofiev or Liebermann

l  An unaccompanied work chosen from one of the following: Robert Aitken, Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, Ian Clarke, Robert Dick, Jennifer Higdon, Shirish Korde, Wil Offemans, Shulamit Ran or Toru Takemitsu

l  A contrasting selection of the applicant's choice

 

At least one of the above works should be memorized.

 

l  Five contrasting orchestral excerpts
