Brass Audition Information

 

 

 

 

 

Trumpet (BM)

 

l  One 18th century piece chosen from the following:

 

ü  Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major (movements I or III only)

ü  J.N. Hummel: Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major

ü  Neruda: Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major

 

l  One 20th century piece chosen from the following:

 

ü  Hindemith: Trumpet Sonata (movements I or III only)

ü  Kennan: Sonata for Trumpet and Piano

ü  Stevens: Sonata for Trumpet and Piano (movement I only)

ü  Enesco: Legend

 

l  Two contrasting etudes

l  All major scales memorized, one octave

l  Sight-reading

 

 

 

 

 

 

Trombone (BM)

 

 

Tenor Trombone applicants:

 

l  One etude from Bordogni/Rochut: Melodious Etudes nos. 2-24

l  One technical etude from Voxman: Selected Studies

l  A solo of applicant’s choice (works such as Guilmant: Morceau Symphonique, Op. 88; Ferdinand David: Concertino; Concerti by Grondahl, Jacob, or Wagenseil; Sonatas by Sulek or Galliard)

l  Applicants will also be asked to demonstrate sight-reading ability

 

Bass Trombone applicants:

 

l  One etude from Bordogni/Rochut: Melodious Etudes nos. 2-24 (as written and down an octave)

l  One technical etude from Blume-Fink: 36 Studies for Trombone with F Attachment or Uber/Knaub: 30 Studies

l  A solo of applicant’s choice (works such as Hidas, Rhapsody; Lebedev, Concerto in One Movement; Jacob, Cameos; Stevens, Sonatina).

l  Applicants will also be asked to demonstrate sight-reading ability

Horn (BM)

 

 

l  One technical etude from Kopprasch: 60 Selected Studies

l  One etude demonstrating your beautiful sound and phrasing abilities from Gallay, Kling or Maxime

l  One solo work of the applicant's choice from the list of pieces below (or from selections of comparable difficulty):

 

ü  Hindemith: Horn Sonata (first mvmt)

ü  Krol: Laudatio (all)

ü  Ketting: Intrada (all)

ü  Mozart Horn Concertos 2, 3 or 4 (first mvmt)

ü  Mozart: Concert Rondo in E-flat Major, K. 371 (all)

ü  F. Strauss: Concerto, Op. 8 (first mvmt)

ü  F. Strauss: Nocturno, Op. 7 (all)

ü  R. Strauss: Concerto No. 1, Op. 11 (first or third mvmt)

 

l  Applicants will be asked to demonstrate ear, range and flexibility through simple scale and arpeggio exercises

l  Applicants will be asked to demonstrate sight-reading ability

l  Major scales, two octaves memorized

 

 

 

Euphonium (BM)

 

 

l  An etude of your choice from Bordogni: Melodious Etudes or Rochut: Melodious Etudes

l  A technical etude of your choice from one of the following:

 

ü  Voxman: Selected Studies for Baritone

ü  Arban: Characteristic Studies

ü  Bousquet: 36 Celebrated Studies

 

l  A solo of your choice selected from:

 

ü  Barat: Andante and Allegro

ü  Capuzzi: Andante and Rondo

ü  Curnow: Rhapsody for Euphonium

ü  Guilmant: Morceau Symphonique

ü  Marcello: any sonata

ü  Jacob: Fantasia  

 

 

 

 

 

Tuba (BM)

 

l  An Etude of your choice from Bordogni: Melodius Etudes

l  A Technical Etude of your choice from one of the following:

 

ü  Blazevich: 70 Advanced Etudes

ü  Kopprasch: 60 Selected Studies

ü  Tyrell: 40 Advanced Studies

 

l  A Solo of your choice from one of the following:

 

ü  Capuzzi: Andante and Rondo

ü  Gregson: Tuba Concerto, mvt. 1

ü  Haddad: Suite for Tuba

ü  Hartley: Suite for Unaccompanied Tuba

ü  Hindemith: Tuba Sonata

ü  Marcello: Sonata (any)

ü  Bach/Bell: Air and Bouree
