Keyboard Audition Information

 

 

 

 

Piano Performance (MM & DMA)

 

 

Video Prescreening (required)

 

▶ The prescreening recording must include the performance of a solo recital program consisting of at least 45 minutes of music. Applicants should select pieces that represent the highest level of their musicality and abilities. A minimum of three styles should be represented, including all or part of a major work from the classical period.

▶Upload and attach your video prescreening to the Butler School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-only prescreening submissions do not qualify.

 

Live audition (if invited)

 

If invited for a live audition the actual duration of the live audition will be shorter, but 45 minutes of music should be prepared. Applicants invited to a live audition may submit a full repertoire list to be included in their application file.

 

Piano Assistantships

 

All students interested in applying for a teaching assistantship in piano must request an interview and submit a sample teaching video as a part of their prescreening materials. This video should last between 10 and 20 minutes, be unedited and show the applicant interacting with students in a private instruction or classroom piano setting. We cannot honor requests for assistantship interviews made after the application deadline or without a sample teaching video.

 

Collaborative Piano (MM & DMA)

 

 

Video Prescreening

 

l  A 20-minute video of a recent live collaborative performance(s) which the applicant feels best represents their pianistic and collaborative abilities.

 

▶ Each individual work should be cut into a separate video file.


▶ Upload and attach your video prescreening to the Butler School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-

    only prescreening submissions do not qualify.

Audition (if invited)

 

All invited applicants must confirm specific repertoire choices with Professor Valentine.

 

All applicants

 

ü  An example of an orchestral reduction, which can be either a movement from a standard instrumental concerto or a standard operatic aria.

ü  Sight-reading

ü  Interview with the collaborative faculty

ü  Optional: A short solo piano piece or movement

 

M.M. & A.D. only

 

ü  Two contrasting movements from a standard instrumental sonata.

ü  A list of six art songs; two each in German, French and English, from which faculty will choose at the audition.

 

D.M.A. only

 

ü  A complete, standard instrumental sonata. Several options would be appreciated (but not required) to facilitate partnering.

ü  A list of nine art songs; three each in German, French and English, from which faculty will choose at the audition.

 

 

Organ (MM & DMA)

 

Audition material should consist of three contrasting works or movements lasting no more than 30 minutes (memorization not required), and taken from the following:

M.M. Performance 

l  A major prelude and fugue or a trio sonata by Johann Sebastian Bach

l  A selection of various pieces from different styles/periods

 

D.M.A. Performance 

l  A major prelude and fugue or a trio sonata by Johann Sebastian Bach

l  A pre-Bach work (Buxtehude, Bruhns, Couperin, Grigny, etc.)

l  A work from the 19th, 20th or 21st century
