Woodwinds Audition Information

Bassoon (MM & DMA)

All Graduate Applicants

Video Prescreening (required)

l  Fully diminished 7th chord arpeggios from low B flat to high B flat, from low B to high B and from low C to high C in eighth notes at quarter note = 100; F harmonic minor scale and arpeggio, 2 octaves; G melodic minor scale and arpeggio, 2 octaves

l  Mozart: Concerto in Bb major, K. 191/186e – 1st and 2nd movements (expositions only)

l  Mozart: Marriage of Figaro overture, bars 1 - 24

l  Ravel: solo excerpt from Bolero

l  Please submit a one to three minute video recording on which you verbally introduce yourself and discuss your musical and non-musical interests, your goals, your reasons for applying to UT Austin and a creative project in which you have been involved.

l  Clap the beat while singing the following rhythms on a neutral syllable:

  l  All major scales

l  Chromatic scale, full-range

l  Mozart: Concerto in Bb major, K. 191/186e – 1st and 2nd movements (expositions only)

l  Two additional contrasting solo movements or etudes of your choice

l  Orchestral excerpts:

ü  Ravel: Bolero

ü  Mozart: Marriage of Figaro overture (entire first page)

ü   

l  Sing a major scale and arpeggio

l  Clap the beat while singing the following rhythms on a neutral syllable:

Clarinet (MM & DMA)

Video Prescreening (required):

l  Mozart: Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622 - 1st movement exposition

l  One contrasting movement or piece of the applicant's choosing from the standard solo repertoire

l  Orchestral excerpts:

ü  Mendelssohn: Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream - Beginning to letter B

ü  Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major - first movement measures 474-492 and second movement measures 68-77

Each prescreen selection may be recorded in a separate video. Upload and attach your video prescreening to the Butler School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-only prescreening submissions do not qualify.

l  One complete work of the applicant's choosing from standard solo repertoire

l  One solo work of the applicant's choosing from the 20th or 21st century

l  Sight-reading

l  Orchestral excerpts (standard solos):

ü  Mendelssohn: Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream

ü  Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major

ü  Brahms: Symphony No. 3 in F major

ü  Stravinsky: The Firebird (Variation of the Firebird)

Flute (MM & DMA)

Video Prescreening (required):

l  Mozart: Concerto in G major, K. 313, or D major, K. 314 – 1st and 2nd movements (exposition only)

l  One contrasting movement or piece of the applicant’s choosing from the standard solo repertoire

l  Orchestral excerpts:

ü  Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3 – measures 328 – 360

ü  Mendelssohn: Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream – 2 measures before P to the end

ü  Brahms: Symphony No. 4, movement IV – measures 93 – 105

Accompaniment for the prescreening recording is optional. If invited, no accompaniment will be allowed at the live audition.

l  Major solos from the following orchestral repertoire:

ü  Ravel: Daphnis and Chloe

ü  Stravinsky: Firebird Suite

Oboe (MM & DMA)

l  Mozart Concerto for Oboe, K. 314, 1st movement (exposition only)

l  A solo piece of the applicant's choice

l  A minimum of three orchestra excerpts of the applicant's choice

Selected works should be contrasting in style, tempo and time period.

Audition must be unaccompanied.

Saxophone (MM & DMA)

l  Please select twenty to thirty minutes of contrasting repertoire for submission. Applicants may refer to the suggested repertoire list and direct any further questions to Dr. Stephen C. Page via email.

l  Submit a short video that includes a verbal introduction and details your musical and career goals, interests (both musical and non-musical) and your reasons for applying to the Butler School of Music.

Live audition (if invited):

l  Major and harmonic minor scales, full range and performed from memory; major thirds and fourths; whole-tone scales

l  Three movements/selections from the solo repertoire, two of which should be contrasting, such as:
