Woodwind Audition Information
Bassoon (BM)
l Three-octave B♭ chromatic scale from low B♭ to the highest B♭, slurred up & down
l Two-octave major & minor scales--up to four flats/sharps; some articulated
l Two contrasting styles of music from the traditional bassoon repertoire. (One to demonstrate your technical facility and the other for lyrical expression)
l Sight-reading should also be expected
Clarinet (BM)
l Two pieces in contrasting styles, selected from the standard concerto, sonata, or solo repertoire
l One etude chosen from the Rose 40 or 32 Studies
l All major and minor scales and a chromatic scale
l Sight reading may be requested
Flute (BM)
l Three pieces of contrasting styles, which may include movements from concerti, sonatas and solo repertoire
l All two-octave major and minor scales
l Three-octave chromatic scale
l Sight reading may be requested
Oboe (BM)
l Two contrasting works. (A movement from a larger work is acceptable. One work may be an etude such as Barret or Ferling.)
l All major and minor scales from memory.
l Sight reading may be included at on-campus auditions.
Saxophone (BM)
l Two or three pieces or movements (~15 minutes of repertoire) in contrasting styles, demonstrating technical facility and melodic expressiveness.
l The following works represent an appropriate level of audition repertoire:
ü Bozza - Improvisation et caprice
ü Creston – Sonata
ü Glazunov – Concerto
ü Heiden – Solo or Sonata
ü Ibert – Concertino da camera
ü Maurice – Tableaux de Provence
ü Milhaud – Scaramouche
ü Muczynski – Sonata
ü Noda – Improvisations I, II, or III
ü Villa-Lobos – Fantasia
l All major and minor scales (harmonic or melodic), played both ascending and descending through the full range of the instrument
l A chromatic scale (Bb-F#3), played both ascending and descending
l Sight-reading required
l In addition, students may elect to perform a transcribed jazz solo or improvise with pre-recorded accompaniment
※ On-campus auditions take the form of a private lesson. Students auditioning on campus begin the audition with a performance of their
prepared repertoire and scales; the audition continues with a lesson of 30 to 40 minutes duration that includes work on the prepared repertoire
and sight-reading.
