Mannes College, The New School for music은 뉴욕에 위치한 연구중심대학의 하나인 The New School 대학의 8개 학교 중 하나로 클래식 중심의 음악 원입니다. The New School의 main campus가 뉴욕 Greenwich Village에 위치하는 반면 Mannes는

Manhattan의 upper west side에 위치합니다. The New School 산하의 8개 대학은 아래의 8개 학교를 의미합니다.

Mannes, the New School for Music은 음악 원 (Conservatory) 입니다. 1916년 New York Symphony Orchestra 단장인 David

Mannes와 뉴욕 필 지휘자 Walter Damrosch의 동생 Clara Damrosch에 의해 The David Mannes Music School로 설립 되었습니다. ​처음에 Manhattan의 Upper East Side에 campus가 위치했으며 David 와 Clara가 교직에서 은퇴한 1938년 후에 Mannes

School로 알려졌습니다.

1953년부터 학위를 수여하고, 학교명을 Mannes College of Music으로 바꿨습니다. 1989년에 Mannes는 8개의 학교들로 구성된 The New School과 합쳐졌고, 2005년에는 학교 이름을 Mannes College, the New School for Music으로 바꿨습니다. 학교는 College와 Preparatory 두 개의 division으로 나뉘어져 있습니다. 공연과 음악이론 중심의 확장된 프로그램으로 구성돼 있고, 관련전공에 BM, MM, Bachelor's-Masters, Professional Studies Diploma 등의 프로그램을 제공합니다. 박사과정인 DMA 프로그램은

offer 하지 않습니다.

Mannes 음대의 공연시설로 뉴욕시내의 Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall을 비롯해 College of Performing Arts 내 (內)에

​Ernst C. Stiefel Hall, Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall, Bank Street Theater, John L. Tishman Auditorium 등이 있으며 매년

440회가 넘는 performance가 공연됩니다.

학교의 저명한 교수진에는 기타의 Michael Newman, 바이올린의 Edwin Bachmann, orchestra conducting의 Carl Bamberger,

​바순의 Leonard Hindell, composition의 George Szell등이 있고, 졸업생들 중에는 정명훈 (pianist and conductor), Richard Goode

(Grammy-winning pianist), Patricia Neway (Tony Award-winning musical theatre actress), Tim Page 

(Pulitzer Prize-winning music critic), Murray Perahia (Grammy-winning pianist) 같은 저명 음악인들이 있습니다.
